Medal of Merit
In 1986, the Medal of Honor was created to honor those Nobles who worked behind the scenes for the benefit of the Temple. It has been a phenomenal success and we want to continue honoring them. It was not intended to award those work on a project that only benefits a Club, Unit or Committee such as a fund raiser for that Club, Unit or Committee.
Over 4000 Nobles have acquired credit toward a Ben Ali Medal of Merit. This is an opportunity to recognize the merits of your members. Credits are reported from two sources: the Temple Office and the Club, Committee or Unit Secretary. If the leader wishes, he can designate a Noble as the MOM Coordinator to accept the responsibility for providing the information of those qualifying for credit to Ben Ali's Medal of Merit Chairman.
Starting January 2000, the Medal of Merit program uses "hours" as credits in lieu of "points" previously used. All previous "points" have been converted into hours and were carried over to the revised program. Also, the name of the program was changed from Medal of Honor to “Medal of Merit”.
It takes 200 hours to earn the Medal of Merit. A bar engraved with the number of "hours" earned is awarded or each succeeding 200 hours. Hours are cumulative and are continued from year to year.
All in all, there are a number of categories by which a Noble may earn credit toward the MOM bars. The categories are listed in the table below. It is suggested that all names and their Shrine member numbers be typed on a "Master" Report Form. Copies of this Master Report Form can be used to record credit earning activities. For those who did not earn credit during the reporting period, just leave the space for hours blank.
The Shrine number is the Noble's Ben Ali membership number shown on his dues card. Sometimes there are several Nobles with the same name, but each Noble has a different membership number, so the number is critical. Hours are credited by member number. Nobles who are not members of Ben Ali are not eligible to participate in the program, unless they become affiliate or associate members with Ben Ali.
Finally, please accumulate several events on one form and then send the form directly to the Medal of Merit Chairman, Stan Solid , at 4721 Della Robia Court Fair Oaks, CA 95628 or email to srsolid@aol.com.
If you have any questions or concerns, Please call (916) 580-4583 or email me.

“MEDAL OF MERIT” CREDIT SYSTEM DEFINITIONS
Category 1 thru 5; These category’s are defined as listed. Please contact Medal of Merit chairman if you have any questions. Please notify chairman of any changes or issues with hours reported.
Category 6 “Special Programs”: The Special Programs are programs designated by the Potentate which enhances the Shrine image to the public or benefits Ben Ali Temple as a whole and which is not primarily for the benefit of a Club, Unit or Committee. For example, the annual Temple Picnic held in the summer at the Activities Center is a special program. Picnics held by Clubs, Units or Committees do NOT
qualify in this category. Special programs would also include service where such appearance and publicity broadens the Shrine image. For example: Uniformed Shriners as a Color Guard serving at a function which is primarily attended by non-Shriner's. Functions such as fund raisers benefitting the Club, Unit or Committee or PV's do NOT qualify. Contact the Medal of Merit Chairman or the Temple Office if you have any questions.
Category 7 “Hours worked at the Temple”: This category includes such things as time spent preparing mailings to the Nobility, setting up tables and chairs for Temple activities or special events, repairs and improvements to the Activities Building, Hart House, or the grounds.
Category 8 “Sanctioned Parades”: Sanctioned parades are pre-approved by the Potentate. Participation, as Shriner's of a Shrine Unit, in parades which have not had prior approval by the Potentate are, of course, prohibited and so no credit can be earned. Please, list each parade separately for identification.
Category 9 “Ambassador, Appointed Divan, Aide, Liaison, Committee, Event Leader” : It has been suggested and approved that those Nobles who work in these positions be recognized for their contribution to the Temple by awarding them Medal of Merit hours. The list would include Ambassadors, Appointive Divan, Aides, Liaison, Directors staff, Purveyors, Committees, Special Events leaders and workers, Ceremonial Support, Hospital Fundraisers, Ladies Bazaar and Temple Technical Support.
Category 10 “Temple Stated Meeting” : This category has been added to the Medal of Merit program to recognize Nobles who attend Temple functions in an effort to help promote Temple activities. By attending stated meeting dinners the Nobility is working to promote the Temple through communication and participation.
PRESENTATION OF MEDALS AND BARS
!f at all possible, the medals are to be presented by the Unit, Committee or Club Head at one of their meetings. If the Honoree is not a member of a Club, Unit or Committee, medals and bars should be presented by an Ambassador living near the Honoree or may be mailed directly to Noble. Remember it takes time to engrave the bars and assemble the medals. Please allow 30 days from day of request to receipt of medal(s).
Co-Chairman is Bob Jackson and can be contacted via e-mail at bobjackson1@att.net or phone 916-952-4049.
